Volunteering with a Social Enterprise
Almost all of our members rely on volunteer Boards of Directors or Management Committees and most of the Social Enterprises around Edinburgh have volunteers who work with them to support the organisation and the different clients or groups they work with.
Volunteering is personally rewarding and offers the chance to work with a different or wider range of people than you are normally in contact with. As well as the chance to utilise existing skills and knowledge there is often the opportunity to gain new skills as well as a new or different perspective on many issues.
Our members would value your services in a variety of roles from board level down to "hands on" experiences working to support the organisations social or environmental benefit in a variety of ways.
Volunteering may be either long term or short term as much as organisations welcome long term involvement with some volunteers spanning up to fifteen years with an organisation there is often a need for short term volunteer help on particular projects or activities.
By volunteering you not only help others but yourself too.
Benefits of volunteering
Volunteering helps you gain more or new experience and can assist in building up your 'soft skills' such as team-working, problem solving, communication and motivation.
Doing voluntary work also helps give you material for your CV, gives you more work experience to talk about at interviews and may assist in bringing some of your experience up to date.
- Helps develop your CV
- Assists in boosting your confidence
- Boosts soft skills
- Provides and opportunity to learn new skills
- May gain a reference to take to employers if required
Get on board
There are over 1800 voluntary sector organisations across Edinburgh and they all have one thing in common. They are all governed by volunteers. Whether these volunteers are called board members, Trustees (the term we tend to use) or Directors - it is them who govern the organisation and make sure it achieves its aims, is successful, well run and well managed. Being a Trustee is a very responsible and rewarding voluntary role.
An estimated 90% of voluntary organisations in the city currently have vacancies for volunteer Trustees on their management committees. This highlights the great need for people to help out to support the valuable work these organisations do.
The rewarding role of the Trustee is a varied and challenging one - luckily the number and diversity of organisations means that your interests and skills can be easily matched.
